A great opportunity presents itself for the Libertarian Party to get record-high votes in Brooklyn this year, and to impact Libertarian politics in Brooklyn for years to come.
The organization Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn is holding its annual Walkathon to raise money for its legal battle against abuse of eminent domain for Bruce Ratner's Atlantic Yards project. Supporters of DDDB have opposed the incumbent Brooklyn Borough President, Democrat Marty Markowitz, since he first started supporting Ratner's project in 2004. Markowtiz is still in office, still supporting the Ratner project, and now, worse yet, is running for a previously-term-limited third term.
In 2005, DDDB supporters voted for the Green Party candidate for Brooklyn Borough President, but this year the Greens are not running any candidate for that post. This year we have a chance to position the Libertarian Party as THE opposition to the Democrats, for DDDB would rather eat fish than ever vote for a Republican. (Just an expression, fish lovers. Don't write complaining about my disrespect for fish.) One of the prominent founders of DDDB told me he would vote for our Libertarian candidate for borough president, Michael Sanchez.
I want you to join us in the walk on October 17 and to donate to DDDB as part of the Brooklyn Libertarian Party team of walkers. Let's show them that the Libertarian Party always stands for the rights of the individual over the interests of the government, and ingratiate the Libertarian Party with this natural constituency. I have permission for us to carry our eye-catching banner in the 2.3-mile walk. This is a chance to get big, big exposure. A donation to DDDB in the name of the Brooklyn Libertarian Party gets you the biggest bang for the buck. These are our targeted natural voters; this is targeted advertising. You can donate anonymously or under your own name as part of the Brooklyn Libertarian Party team. Most unfortunately, the Saturday afternoon timing of this event precludes our Orthodox Jewish supporters from distant parts of Brooklyn joining us in person, but you can donate anyway.
