The 56 th season of the Sinai Forum Presented by Purdue University North Central will present “An Evening with John Stossel” at 7 p.m. in the Elston Middle School Auditorium. Stossel recently joined the Fox Network and will have a weekly show on the Fox Business Network. He was a noted ABC News correspondent who was co-anchor of "20/20," and authored two national bestsellers. His topic will focus on the up-to-the minute questions on peoples' minds. He has earned 19 Emmy Awards, has been honored five times by the National Press Club for excellence in consumer reporting, was presented the George Polk Award for Outstanding Local Reporting and he received the George Foster Peabody award. His “20/20” reports addressed subjects ranging from addiction to parenting. He was featured in the recurring segment, “Give Me a Break,” presenting commentary – and a skeptical look – at an array of issues that range from pop culture controversies to government regulation. Stossel is also known for addressing issues that face Americans today and asking questions and getting answers. His first special, “Are We Scaring Ourselves to Death?” examined prevalent fears of things ranging from crime to chemicals. His “Blame Game” special examined the growing tendency to blame misfortune on others. In “John Stossel Goes to Washington," he looked at how under both Democrats and Republicans, government continues to expand. A book signing will follow Stossel's talk.

From our friends with the NW Indiana Patriots. The RDA definitely has its reach into LaPorte County and is something to which we should all be paying close attention. The RDA is behind much of the eminent domain discussion for the proposed "inland port" and intermodal railyard proposed in LaPorte County. As well, the RDA is headed up by our old nemisis, former La Porte Mayor Leigh Morris. Please consider coming out to this meeting. Regarding the proposed Regional Transportation Authority referendum mentioned in the note below, I have directly communicated with both Commissioners Bohacek and Layton and they are looking at the 2010 primary election to hold this referendum. They state no consequences for this not happening as a special election in 2009 and refuse to fund an unnecessary vote. Regards, Dan Drexler ******************** ***** The NWI Times is hosting a symposium on the RDA. Here is its notice of the event: The Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority was established as a means of fostering regional cooperation on major regional projects, including expanding transportation options and shoreline development aimed at increasing public access to Lake Michigan. The RDA leverages local funding to provide the local match for state and federal grants. Grumbling about the RDA in Porter County, however, has raised questions about whether the RDA is necessary. The Porter County Council even voted to cut off funding for the RDA and rescinded its appointment of the county's representative on the RDA. In light of this controversy, the Times is hosting a symposium on the RDA and its future. Transportation is certain to play a large role in this discussion, because skepticism about the efficacy and economics of public transportation has been at the center of the negative attitudes, but the Marquette plan for lakeshore development will be discussed as well. The RDA Symposium will feature remarks from special guests and a panel discussion. Moderator: Dan Lowery, Host of the Lakeshore Focus, Lakeshore Public Television Panelists: Leigh Morris, RDA Chairman Mark Reshkin, retired Indiana University Northwest geology professor Thomas McDermott Jr., Mayor, City of Hammond Robert Harper, Porter County Commissioner Larry Blanchard, President, Lake County Council Jack Rust, President, Porter County Farm Bureau Inc. The symposium will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2009 Porter County Expo Center 215 E Division Rd Valparaiso, IN 46383-9560. Map here. Related to this, a referendum will be held on November 3, 2009, in which voters in Lake, Porter, LaPorte and St. Joseph Counties will be asked to vote on whether or not a Regional Transportation Authority with the power to levy taxes to fund rail and bus service should be established in these counties. A fact sheet about the proposition being voted on is here.

The convention is a must-attend event each year in our party. Libertarians from across the State meet to mingle and swap ideas with each other, attend informative breakout sessions, and listen to interesting speakers. The keynote speaker at the Saturday Night dinner will be Radley Balko from Reason Magazine. He has also worked at the Cato Institute. He is an Indiana native, and graduated from Indiana University. He will be speaking on issues ranging from property rights to the Liberty movement. Also speaking will be Wayne Allyn Root. Root was the 2008 Vice Presidential nominee, and is working to win the 2012 Presidential nomination. He is also rumored to be seeking the LNC Chairmanship. There will also be presentations on school choice, candidate training, and reaching out to the media. You can find out more on the speakers, and register, here: http://www.lpin.org/ n... The LPIN will also hold it's annual business meeting. This year, we will elect new officers, including a new state chair. Todd Singer has decided not to run again, which means there will be a race for chair! We will also set the course for the 2010 elections. As you know, the Secretary of State's race is in 2010. The LP will maintain automatic ballot access by winning at least 2% of the vote in that race. There is a cost for both registration and hotel rooms. You can find out more about this at the convention website: http://www.lpin.org/ n.... The registration goes towards your meal costs, speakers, and convention space. You can register the day of the convention if necessary, but please RSVP with Executive Director Chris Spangle to ensure that you have a meal!
