Announcing a new Meetup for LaPorte County Libertarian Meetup!

What: Regional Development Authority (RDA) Symposium

When: September 22, 2009 6:30 PM

Where:
Porter County Expo
215 E. Division Rd.
Valparaiso, IN 46383
(219) 464-0133

From our friends with the NW Indiana Patriots. The RDA definitely has its reach into LaPorte County and is something to which we should all be paying close attention. The RDA is behind much of the eminent domain discussion for the proposed "inland port" and intermodal railyard proposed in LaPorte County. As well, the RDA is headed up by our old nemisis, former La Porte Mayor Leigh Morris.

Please consider coming out to this meeting.

Regarding the proposed Regional Transportation Authority referendum mentioned in the note below, I have directly communicated with both Commissioners Bohacek and Layton and they are looking at the 2010 primary election to hold this referendum. They state no consequences for this not happening as a special election in 2009 and refuse to fund an unnecessary vote.

Regards,

Dan Drexler

The NWI Times is hosting a symposium on the RDA. Here is its notice of the event:

The Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority was established as a means of fostering regional cooperation on major regional projects, including expanding transportation options and shoreline development aimed at increasing public access to Lake Michigan. The RDA leverages local funding to provide the local match for state and federal grants.

Grumbling about the RDA in Porter County, however, has raised questions about whether the RDA is necessary. The Porter County Council even voted to cut off funding for the RDA and rescinded its appointment of the county's representative on the RDA.

In light of this controversy, the Times is hosting a symposium on the RDA and its future. Transportation is certain to play a large role in this discussion, because skepticism about the efficacy and economics of public transportation has been at the center of the negative attitudes, but the Marquette plan for lakeshore development will be discussed as well.

The RDA Symposium will feature remarks from special guests and a panel discussion.

Moderator: Dan Lowery, Host of the Lakeshore Focus, Lakeshore Public Television

Panelists:

Leigh Morris, RDA Chairman
Mark Reshkin, retired Indiana University Northwest geology professor
Thomas McDermott Jr., Mayor, City of Hammond
Robert Harper, Porter County Commissioner
Larry Blanchard, President, Lake County Council
Jack Rust, President, Porter County Farm Bureau Inc.

The symposium will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2009
Porter County Expo Center
215 E Division Rd
Valparaiso, IN 46383-9560.

Related to this, a referendum will be held on November 3, 2009, in which voters in Lake, Porter, LaPorte and St. Joseph Counties will be asked to vote on whether or not a Regional Transportation Authority with the power to levy taxes to fund rail and bus service should be established in these counties. A fact sheet about the proposition being voted on is here.
